Description
A set of three (3) resin based diamond sharpening stones.
Dr. Marv’s Scientific Sharpening stones – Medium Grit Set:
1x Stone 20 µm
1x Stone 10 µm
1x Stone 5 µm
Size of the Aluminium Blank: 159 x 25 mm x 3 mm
Size of the Abrasive Layer: 150×25 + At least 4 mm thickness
Diamond Concentration: >50% by weight!
Factory Dressed via contamination free single point diamond chiselling. Comes in a storage box.
These are the “Dr. Marv’s Scientific Sharpening Stones”. They have an unheard of concentration and are absurdly pure and contamination free. This was achieved by very tight, electron microscopy quality control, followed by manufacturing in a laminar flow box. Dressing is done via single point diamond chiseling, which also stops any contamination. Moreover, every set is diamond chiseled individually in the same fixture, so the stones are very, very close in their thickness. I personally do not feel the need to adjust the angle when switching from one stone to the next.
Their development is based on my scientific research into abrasives. I firmly believe that these are super high performing abrasives!
I am very proud to say that the resin, filament, foam, chemicals and aluminium are Made in Germany. Machining of the aluminium blanks was done in Germany. Only the diamond is imported, but meticulously quality controlled via SEM. I am absurdly proud to state that all abrasive stones are handmade by me in the German Alps.
As this is a handmade product, some small blemishes such as tiny bubbles, scratches or imperfections are to be expected. I can promise that they do not subtract from the performance of the sharpening stones!

Lynn Hunton –
These are the most amazing stones, period. I have used almost every stone available and these stones out perform all of them. I have been able to cut my sharpening time for Rex121 and other hard steels to minutes vice half an hour or more. The stones come absolutely flat and ready to use, no pre use preparation needed. The are such a high grit purity that their feedback and speed is awesome. Going from a 400grit diamond EP edge to Dr Marv’s stone is no problem. They will last forever, you won’t be disappointed.
Tamir –
I believe these stones are game changers for sharpeners, especially when it comes to high carbide/high performance steels. The results from these stones are exceptional! I personally can’t wait for the coarse grit set to come out
Lucas Gumbiner –
I have been making knives for around 8 years and have tried many many different sharpening stones in that time. These are by far the fastest cutting and most refined finishing stones I’ve ever used. They are a must have for anyone who takes sharpening seriously!
Luis E. –
These stones have the best finish to speed ratio of any stone I have ever tried. They wear very evenly and also not very fast compared to many other resin bonded stones, but still maintain a great speed. The CNC machined and laser engraved backing plates are also a super nice touch. The box they come in also feels and looks really neat.
Brandon Smith –
I haven’t quite experienced anything like these stones before – their uniformity is unmatched due to Dr. Marv’s manufacturing methodology and it shows in the results. The 20 alone is enough to finish knives on for a truly keen edge, but taking things down to 5 produces a solid mirror, and combining that with the fine grit stones dramatically cuts down on the time it takes to get a perfect mirror. I have several other brands of stones (venev, pdt, suehiro, shapton, sharpal, kdtu) and these are rivaling, if not exceeding, the very best. Also incredibly easy to clean compared to other stones – just a bit of oil during sharpening to float the particles, and a bit of oil afterwards and any debris just wipes right off. Nothing gets embedded, and Dr. Marv’s case is highly adequate from keeping them separated from other stones and preventing grit contamination. If you are a professional or looking to acquire the very best for a fixed angle system, these would be at the top of my recommendations. 5/5 through and through.
Tucker Holladay –
Got exactly what I paid for! Got these stones because I wanted to get a mirror edge on my knife. It does exactly that! No buffing needed to get what I wanted. And the knife is SUPER sharp. Would recommend to others for sure. As a beginner knife sharpener, these worked better than I could have hoped.

This is Roman ‘s / Kase Knives Switzerland ‘s review about these stones.
Around 6 months ago, I approached Marv regarding the analysis of some stones I was using. I was having my doubts about fine grit stones being true the advertised grit, so I sent him a bunch of stones from various manufacturers.I had no idea what it would lead to. Marv discovered – and shared on his blog, go check it out if you haven’t yet – that many single digit micron stones had contamination and/or agglomeration. Marv’s response to me was that he would make better stones. And honestly, I was very sceptical, and told him so. How can this guy make what was tried for a decade with limited success, and do it better? But when he sent me the first prototypes shortly after, he had alrady achieved much more than I thought was possible. So my expectations started to grow. Over the following weeks and months, Marv kept sending me more and more prototypes, constantly improving them. And when he sent me the final product to test, which are these stones, I was and am still blown away by the performance.
These are truly the best stone I have ever used – for the following reasons:
1) No contamination problems from the manufacturer. These stones are the actual grit they are marketed as – I do not need to endlessly strop anymore with diamond emulsions or pastes because of this. I love perfectly polished edges, and these stones make it so easy.
2) Speed. I never had finishing stones this fast. Sure, an electroplated or vitrified stone will be faster, BUT there is either the afformentioned contamination problem when it comes to vitrified (see previous point) or the limit in finest grit possible when it comes to electroplated stones.
3) Time before refreshing / setting back of the resin is needed. I sharpen a lot of steel at 71 HRC, namely REX121, and I used to have the problem that no matter which finishing stone or bond I tried, I had to dress/refresh it before every new 71 HRC REX121 knife. With these, I have gone through several knives by now and am STILL getting excellent results when sharpening 71 HRC REX121. I even had uploaded a Youtube video on my channel warning people to dress their stones before sharpening a 71 HRC REX121 knife. With these stones, this isn’t neccessary.
4) These stones are giving me the sharpest edges off a 5 micron stone I ever had, and with some stropping, the sharpest overall edges ever, and I am a huge sharpening geek since 2014.
5) The stones wear extraordinarily slow. This is something that bugged me on all resin stones I had tried so far – I had to buy new ones way too often. Yet for finishing, I have yet to find a better solution than resin bonded type stones. So I always had to buy expensive resin stones, wear them down, buy new ones for lots of money, rinse, repeat. These wear as slow as my (now former) metal bonded stones, which I didn’t think was possible. So I’m saving money on the long run as a knife maker, which is great!
What I don’t like
1) The freehanding performance. I know these aren’t even intended for freehanding, but of course I tried. For freehand sharpening I prefer a more “scratchy” feedback, and these stones are rally smooth and slick. I have seen other freehand sharpeners like these stones for exactly that reason, but personally, I prefer a different sensomotorical feedback when sharpening in freehand mode. If you like the Shapton glass stones or Naniwa Professional stones for freehanding, the Dr Marv Stones stones are the right pick for you. If you – like myself – prefer stones like the Shapton Kuromaku, and want to freehand, then these stones maybe aren’t for you.
Conclusion
If you want to get the what I think are the best sharpening stones for pre-finishing to finishing operations in a guided system currently available on the market, get the Dr. Marv Stones.
And yes, this is my own, honest opinion, I am not paid to say this or otherwise receiving benefits for writing a good review. Some have seen me praising these stones a lot during the last weeks and have questioned whether my excitement is genuine, since I typically tend to be more sober minded whenever it comes to “the latest craze”. This time, it is different though. I know Marv personally and during the prototype phase, before the product was ready, several times whenever the performance of his back then prototypes was bad, I criticized them openly. But Marv always listened and came up with these amazing stones, and dare I say I am happy and a bit proud to have played a small part in this, eventhough it was tiny. These are the stones I always wanted over the years and now they are available to the public. Get them now!
Frederic Rellecke –
Best stones available these days.
Tested them on a wide range of knives from poor to top notch quality and they just perform.
As a German it warms my heart that we still make great products in country.
Will get the others sets too
Choi, JK Precision Analysis –
I’m one of the few geeks who has tried most of the manual sharpening stones on the market, and my journey has finally come to the end.
To summarize my long journey experiences:
Want actual EXTRAORDINARY? You should ready for understanding what you dealing with, or just simply get the sets of Dr. Marv’s. They are unconventional, Asymmetric power. Let you stop think about ‘is there any better solution’.
Work as rated.
Do not for get. It’s German ratings
Not just any marketing random numbers. Every descriptions of Dr. Marv’s stones have factual details.
Medium grit set removes most of scratches fast and sets up the fine base for true polish. Not by burnishing, with clean cuts.
I’ll over simplify the verdict
1. More Diamond is better.
2. Conventionally, make extrime high concentration was impossible without shedding issue.
3. Dr. Marv’s stones have most high concentration in the market, and actually works.
How and Why is secret (but Dr. Marv exactly knows every details and most of those are extremely valuable trade secret), but you can easily feel it with your own hands and eyes after use them.
It’s stone, but gemstone.
Not for who finds good stones.
Just for who wants virtual State-Of-The-Art Marvel.
For the people who never compromise and see the true value.

WARNING: Do not consider using these stones unless you like your knives to have edge bevels that can double as signaling devices to contact overhead aircraft during search and rescue operations. All kidding aside though, these are the finest stones I’ve ever had the pleasure to use in over a quarter century of sharpening primarily on fixed angle systems. As others have mentioned, the medium set of stones alone will yield polished edges rivaling or exceeding those obtained by using stones of other makes advertising much finer grit levels. They arrived dead flat, cut quickly and, about a dozen or so sharpenings in, are showing no signs of dishing or requiring any dressing. The quality of the stones is only surpassed by the generosity of Dr. Marv in sharing his knowledge and recommendations on how to get the most out of his products. For best results, I highly suggest following his advice. And for the record, I have no personal affiliation with Dr. Marv and have paid the going rate out if pocket for all purchases.
