This blog has some ongoing segments.

A brief study of sharpening stones

The first one is where I look into sharpening stones. It’s a wild mix of everything I get my grubby little paws on. Some are tested on blades, with BESS testing and fancy SEM pictures of the blade or apex. Others are just analysed for their morphology, chemical composition and surface characteristics. If you are interested in the testing procedure, check out this post.

Musings about material removal

This segment is where I look at how sharpening actually works, by looking at the way material is removed from matter through abrasive and cutting processes.

Part 1 is about how galvanic bound diamond stones wear, and how the finish on the blade improves over wear.

Part 2 is about dressing sharpening stones and contamination.

Part 3 is about the effect of stropping on the apex in Vanadis 8

Part 4 is about the effect of different stropping techniques on the apex in M398

Part 5 continues the research into dressing sharpening stones and contamination

Sharpening Mechanisms

This is a very irregular segment where I review sharpening devices I own. Do not expect a lot of instalments to this series.

Part 2 is about the KMFS Vantaedge

Part 3 is about the KMFS Sensei

Metrology Marvels

This is where I explain the principles behind modern, high-tech metrology equipment.

Part 1 is about scanning electron micro analysis.

Abrasive Snippets

This segment is where I look at abrasives under the SEM, and when it’s especially cool or interesting, I make a small post about it. Do not expect too much crazy science and analytical thinking here, this is mostly rad micrographs!

Part 1 is about 0.25 µm diamond (PCD/MCD)

Part 2 is about 3 different CBN grains

Part 3 is about SiC abrasive grits
