Looking around, the typical products used mostly focus on reducing “loading” on the stone. The idea being that a clean stone cuts best. I seldom find information about the actual performance of a lubricant in terms of enabling a perfect cut – just what we need for the best possible sharpening action!

The product you are looking at is my answer to both – it is a high-tech product, previously unseen on the consumer market. If you ask me, what an oil needs, it is several factors: the viscosity has a sweet spot, where the oil film does not drip off the stone, but is still thin enough to quickly coat the stone, the blade and reach into the pores of the abrasive. The product you are looking at is therefore carefully selected for it’s viscosity of 10 mm²/s.
In order to avoid loading of the stone, but also supply continued lubrication down to the grain-metal interface during the sharpening action, the oil needs to have proper load-bearing capacity. For this reason, I selected an oil designed for stamp and die processes. I personally found the tendency of resin stones to load to be at least one order of magnitude lower than with the common mineral oils. Lastly, to enable a clean cutting action and low wear of the diamond grain, the ester-derived “Wunderlubrikant” is wonderful at lubrication.

When I set out to develop my sharpening stones, I didn’t see myself ever selling oil. The regulations in Germany are very strict, and shipping is quite frankly a nightmare. This product is only possible because of the wonderful people at oelheld GmbH, a German specialist producer for grinding, cutting and lapping oils.
